Moon light run

I usually go for a good run on Saturday mornings, but today I had to work from 5:30 am to 1:30pm. After that it was off to my families annual "cookie day". Basically its a family get together where we make and decorate (and eat!) cookies. No way am I going to skip that to go running.  Any way it wasn't until about 7:30pm that I was able to make time for my run.
It was a very refreshing change of pace. The moon was very full and the cold night air was very invigorating.  I ran for about 40 minutes only breathing through my nose. Nasal breathing  while running or fast walking is something I read about in a old strong man training manual (I think it was George Hackenschmit's) from the 1930s. It is a great way to build lung capacity while minimizing undue fatigue and muscle damage. It is also very energizing.
It turns out that modern science is just starting to catch up with what these old timers were already doing, I have seen several recent books and studies that advocate this approach. I will probably elaborate more about the benefits of nasal breathing while exercising in future posts.
